2021.10.19 19:39 Ninnux Trump remarks on the passing of Gen. Colin Powell
"Wonderful to see Colin Powell, who made big mistakes on Iraq and famously, so-called weapons of mass destruction, be treated in death so beautifully by the Fake News Media. Hope that happens to me someday. He was a classic RINO, if even that, always being the first to attack other Republicans. He made plenty of mistakes, but anyway, may he rest in peace!"That was his official remarks. His "condolences" if you want to call it that. I'm sorry, but that is utterly classless.
2021.10.19 19:39 GanledTheButtered Let's talk Kruleboyz Strategy: The Problematic Misconception of Boltboyz
Before I begin: I write this half from the perspective of the Rule of Cool, half from the perspective of raw power potential-per-model. Please do not let me convince you to collect/build/paint differently if you're following your heart. Please pursue that to its end. This is also a long post which I hope inspires a relatively deep strategic and tactical conversation on the riddle that is the Kruleboyz faction.
The Big Yellers Hypothesis: A Trap or a New Meta? I see quite a lot of discussion about Boltboyz and Beast-skewers as being the true value in the Kruleboyz arsenal. To breifly restate the premise, this hypothesis essentially rides on the added 3" range endowed by the Big Yellers faction trait in a game where the ability to deliver damage from afar while avoiding the risk of any coming back, as is the case in a melee fight, is exceptionally valuable. Compound that with Hasty Shot (rolling two shots per model rather than 1), instant mortals on 6's to hit (or 5's if poisoned by a shaman), and a nearby Sludgeraker lending a 12" bubble of +1 MW to weapon profiles, and you have a pretty good threat on the table. Campaigning the Kruleboyz as the sort of ranged Orruk army we've been waiting for is far from rare. Go on any AoS discussion forum that touches Kruleboyz and you'll see this conversation carried forth again and again.
Some articles like this one go so far as to suggest three units of six boltboyz for a total of 18 crossbows on the table. Then there's this one, which sells the Ranged KB meta by suggesting making your sub-faction Big Yellers " lets you pivot towards a pretty potent ranged gameplan," and even goes so far to say the faction is "a very strong choice and probably the default when running a Kruleboyz army which espouse the army as a ranged threat." This article provides the most level-headed assessment of the Big Yellers hypothesis by offsetting it with a more respectable mix of Gutrippaz and some other elements. And, admittedly, the evidence for why Bolt Boyz deserve your attention is strong:
Mathematically, a single squad of 3 Bolt Boyz models in optimal situations potentially deal 18 mortal wounds just in the shooting phase from 15" away (2 dice rolled for Hasty Shot, +1 MW per Sludgeraker within 1 foot). Assuming statistical probabilities, even if you dont roll six 6's to hit, a Swampcalla will help squeeze in a few more MW's by letting the Venom Encrusted Weapons trait ("VEC") pop on 5's to-hit, which makes them just that much more reliable. Even assuming you're not getting VEC to go off, 4+ to hit, 3+ to wound, -1 rend and 2 flat damage is a very admirable profile. Apply this math to the proposed 18 bolt boyz lists advertised above and the math is searing: 36 to-hit rolls for a potential MW peak output of 108 mortal wounds in a single shooting phase from 15" away if paired with a nearby Sludgeraker. That number is simply searing to read.
When a Plan meets the Enemy: The Bolt Boyz Meta on the Table Your opponent will not let you line this sort of shot up unless their brain is smoother than glass. You will not be able to send 108 MW down-range both mathematically or in real-time tactical scenarios. First of all, while statistical anomalies do happen (ever skunk a roll or hit triple-sixes?), the sheer amount of rolls that must go right for a 108-MW-punch to be delivered can be deflect by sheer chance, ward saves, and other methods. Trying to land a 108 MW, or even a 60 MW salvo is a pie-in-the-sky idea. Also, you might not have the optimal overlapping fields of fire or option to focus your shots to make this idea practicable. Beyond that, all 18 of your Bolt Boyz + Sludgeraker need to survive for however long it takes to create that opportunity. The bottom line is that despite the absurd mathematical potential, generalship supersedes all.
The math of Bolt Boyz belies the pragmatic reality: battle always creates sub-optimal conditions, and with something that only has a one-in-six chance of happening on a single die roll - let alone 36 dice at once - the odds are you'll more likely deliver somewhere around 20 or less MW in a given shooting phase assuming optimal conditions (which are rare), and probably closer to 10 MW knowing how the dice gods love to test our sense of humor.
Where this brings us is a situation where you've spent at least a full third of your army budget @ 2,000 points on 18 models that have a pretty standard profile: 2 wounds, a mediocre 5+ save, a 5" move, and meh melee stats, hoping for a less than 16% chance each die you roll in the shooting phase will squeeze out a pair or trio of mortal wounds that a ward save (which can be gotten rather easily) might extinguish.
This raises practical questions: in a game dominated by melee, what happens when you get into close combat in the event of that cheap hobgrot screen being wiped out on turn 1 or 2? What happens if you need to contest a main objective or make a daring play? What happens if you don't get that handful of mortal wounds you were fishing for? The simple answer is: you can't make a workable plan to handle any of this because you lack the manpower (or "orruk-power"), the weapon profiles, and the sheer table presence to do much of anything about it because you sank more than 700 points into a handful of crossbowmen.
Acknowledging the Practical Situation: The Inevitable Tight Spot Age of Sigmar V3 is a game of board control, heroes, and objectives. The ability to throw bodies onto objectives, compartmentalize damage, and have a multitude of tactical options in a given scenario can outweigh or even overwhelm sheer damage output. In a game of prolific ward saves, healing methods, and model replacement opportunities, relying on 18 models to achieve all the work necessary to win a battle is a high ask to make.
To that point, Kruleboyz, as a specific faction, are strong due to their diversity, probably more than most other armies in the game. Their Kruleboyz WAAAGH! ability enables an insane combat phase play in a crucial moment, while Dirty Tricks can contort the battlefield situation before turn 1 even kicks off. Meanwhile, they have easy access to monsters, multiple-wound models, and high-damage-potential units like the Beast Skewer Killbow.
Thus, we enter the conundrum: why focus more than third of your army on 18 models (equaling 36 wounds on the table) who can't reliable fight in melee, contest an objective, and suffer badly once casualties mount due to being 3-orruk units? This is a one-trick-pony and a trap.
The Dark Horse Candidate: The Skullbugz Soup The diverse and unique profiles of Kruleboyz units synergize to a point of absurdity spread across a large portion of the battlefield. In math terms, a 12" bubble emanating from a Sludgeraker which lends an extra MW on VEC natural 6's to hit effectively covers a 24" in diameter circle of the table as that 12" range is actually the radius of a circle. This is a huge amount of table space. Assuming the Marshcrawla Sloggoth is actually a Kruleboyz unit and is eventually Errata'd to be legal in a tournament, a 36" bubble of +1 to hit in melee for ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY POINTS AND 12 WOUNDS IS INSANE. Taking a soup list combining all the Kruleboyz elements and a 16% potential to give a fighting enemy in melee a -1 to hit (or even a 50% chance to hit if fighting a monster), alongside a Murknob's 1-in-3 chance to ignore spells, makes the Kruleboyz potential for utility exponential and far-ranging.
To top it all off: Gobsprakk. The big cheese, the head honcho, the slimy git himself. Need I explain my reasoning for suggesting his inclusion.
Allow me to present a list I believe hits some of this thinking:
|UNIT NAME||TRAITS/ ARTEFACTS/SPELLS||BATTALION|
|LEADERS (*** indicates general)|
|Snatchaboss on Sludgeraker***||Supa Sneaky, Loud 'Un, Amulet of Destiny||Magnificent Command Entourage|
